One of the masked villains, perhaps? I recall at least one being fairly short in stature.

I fear my memory must be failing me! I can not think of a single rat in those films.

Oh, man. [Grin.] Nobody told you Splints used to be human, huh?

What?! What do you mean he used to be human? He has not always been a rat?

[licensetocrane]

No. [She grins, but sobers some.] As far as I know, he was human, but when he rescued the guys as tots he got some of the goop on him that made them what they are. So he mutated.

[ruevealing]

Goop. Mutated! Are you implying that my boys were mutated from some strange substance that also changed their father?

[and then, a little horrified]

Were they human too?!

[licensetocrane]

Oh, man. They haven't told you squat, have they? [She's a little surprised but not by much, and she rolls her eyes.] Probably not that important to them. [Like. Teenagers. It's just a fact of life for them.]

Okay. Short answer, yes, it was a whole thing. But they were just baby turtles to begin with, so in their case it just made them awesome.

[ruevealing]

[Calm down, Rue. Of course they were baby turtles, but honestly, just trying to imagine their boys as itty bitty sweet little baby turtles is going to drive them insane.]

Ah, I see! It is not unlike the Feywild's magic, which granted me sapience and individuality when I was a cub.

[licensetocrane]

You know, I don't know anything about Feywild's magic, but that does sound like the same kinda thing. [Bless, the face Rue is making is so precious.] Splints gave them a home and names and stuff, so that's how you get a rat guy raising four turtle guys.

And that is how they created a family.

[oh, they are just going to melt under the thought. it is so soft and good]

And somehow they still had room in their heart for me.

They're pretty big-hearted guys. [Even Donnie, just shh, keep that on the down low, his supposed rep and all.] And you were there for them when they needed it! I ain't surprised.

[hehe, Rue knows all about Donnie by now]

We were there for each other. I could not have survived without them. When they left - [whew, that is too much for a casual conversation over dinner, rue]

Well, I am just so happy we are all reunited here. And I'm so happy to have you here with us, April.

[Aw, Rue. There's a whole volume of awful she can fill in at the end of that aborted sentence. It sucks being left behind.]

I'm glad they were there for you too, you know. Fam goes both ways, right?

[Rue is so endlessly grateful that April does not press for more information. Another time, another trauma dump!]

That it does. [And let them get a little mushy as Rue reaches out a paw to gently pat over April's hand, all feathers and warmth and softness, before they shoot the young woman a fond look.]

Well, I need to head home before my husband-to-be starts fretting, but please, fuss over Donatello for me since I could not to do it myself.

[She looks vaguely startled at the headpat, actually, but relaxes under it shortly after, smile going a little lopsided. It's kinda nice.]

You got it. I'll make sure he eats and takes a break in there somewhere. Want me to get him to check in?

[This is the moment Rue learns that April has her own set of magical powers.]

You can do that? As long as I've known him, no one can make Donatello do anything!

Oh, I am the Donatello wrangler. If he brick walls you, just come to me.

[Mostly. Donnie sometimes ignores her too, just not as much as the others!! Also Leo is more efficient at just annoying him into submission.]
