Canon Point: End of the ROTTMNT Movie (2022)
Canon Iteration: Original canon
Canon Iteration Explanation: N/A
Skills:
- is really mean with a baseball bat
- Really amazing at improvisational weapons. She literally made a bow and arrow out of a rolling pin and some sausages once.
- Exceptional aim. Can hit tiny targets from long distance
- She can fight using a mix of standard brawling and ninjutsu. Though she favours her own rough style, Splinter has definitely taught her some of his own moves.
- She's a little jack of all trades, b/c the amount of part time jobs this girl has gone through and lost is ridiculous. Nothing obviously highly skilled here, but probably a spattering of a bunch of different bits of knowledge and admin/technical knowhow.
- She's just started college and is doing a degree in journalism
- Honestly she's pretty tough. She isn't a mutant supersoldier but she can keep up with her turtle fam for the most part.
- OH YEAH, and she has a crane license. Very important, clearly. She can wield wrecking balls with deadly prejudice. :D
Canon Abilities:
- Technically no special abilities, but like Casey, having been adopted into the Hamato clan, it's implied she can access their ancestral power and in fact does so in the Season 2 finale, being possessed by their ancestor Karai. But Karai has moved on, so...the potential is there, but currently she's pretty much a normal human.
Role: Familiar.
Role Qualities/Attributes: She's kind of a savage who refuses to give up and used her teeth in her very first canon fight, so I am thinking she'll settle on tiny ferocious animals like the honey badger or the wolverine. Fierce, tends to pick on people bigger than her, etc etc
Role Reasoning: April is still young and, while she definitely has a moral code and her own strong ideas about things, she's more than willing to play support and sidekick for both serious fights and shenanigans alike. She plays big sister to the turtles and is generally a good person but has broken the law multiple times to help out her fam and doesn't bat an eye at it, so. She's much better in a supportive role and will take to it readily in this setting.
April is upbeat, quick-witted, and adventurous. She tends to be a more go-with-the-flow type spirit in the way that she is adaptable and often matches her energy with those around her. She's brave and fierce as hell and quick to jump into a fight, though sometimes that does tend to make her a little reckless (literally the first episode she goes leaping past the turtles to fight a big bad yelling her own name with Mikey going "omigosh she just ran in there!" in a parody of Leeroy Jenkins, so...) and throws herself through a magical portal in pursuit of bad guys despite never having seen a portal before or knowing where it goes. That being said, she's usually reckless only when trying to protect someone or something and has shown many other instances of thinking it through first. She's just not afraid of anything. (Sometimes she probably should be.)
She takes no shit but forgives easily, so will smack someone down for insulting her, but then is over it soon afterward. She also has a fairly maniacal edge and clearly enjoys herself a whole bunch when things are a little wild (shown to be cackling at points when the turtles are literally shrieking). April is also extremely ride or die for her friends and is very much always gonna step up big sister style to either have their back in a fight or just be there if they need some advice. She fights Draxum with the rest of them without fear (though he is definitely out of her league) but is quick to forgive him when the others begrudgingly do, even helping him out when he starts working at her school to pass as human.
Despite this, she has some insecurities. She didn't really fit in at school and it's fairly obvious she has no real friends outside of the turtles and then later on Sunita (who turns out to be a yokai in disguise anyway), and while she's clearly happy just hanging out with her turtle fam, there are instances where she jumps at the chance to be 'normal' and 'accepted' like going to her school prom because she was invited by a popular girl to sit at her table. She can be discouraged by repeated failures but doesn't stay down for long, and she's had a long string of part time jobs that she can't seem to keep-- mostly due to turtle shenanigans, ditching on them to go help her friends, or in one instance accidentally working for the enemy. She keeps her keys from most of the jobs in question and has definitely shared them with the guys so they can go into places they really shouldn't, so despite being a generally good person she doesn't really care about minor law breaking.
April wants to be a journalist and has just started a degree in that regard, and her personality also reflects this: she's inquisitive, quick to investigate shady stuff, and often reckless here, too-- to an extent. She tends to know when she's out of her depth and calls in backup, but she can generally look after herself until such backup arrives. She's also shown to be very quick-witted here, shows an ability to blend in and disguise herself (though admittedly in true cartoon fashion) and low key distraction and theft to sneak into places she really shouldn't be.
On the idea of 'being the best that she can be', April will be adamant of course that she doesn't need to change, she's already great. But she's young and immature and can be far too reckless, and her best version is likely a version of herself that has learned to balance these traits with her actual skill set and practical thinking. She's pretty badass for a teenage girl, but she's also been lucky so far, and she needs to be able to curb her wilder impulses and consider the situation and those around her more carefully.
